Wong Ping

Wong Ping is the twenty-something dockmaster of the Yangtze port of Chungking. He is also the unofficial mayor of the city, by virtue of the fact that he is the least afraid of Soong Li, the Dragon that dominates city life. When he mentions the nickname of Lake Dian, he sets in motion events that could lead to war.

When Wong Ping decides to seek a wife, it sets off a chain of events that affects his best friend and the city’s government, and reaches even to the neighboring province of Yunnan. The woman chosen for him is the Kunming Tiger’s chief housekeeper. His best friend becomes offended by his secrecy in dealing with the marriage broker and plots to overthrow his leadership.

Can one seemingly minor decision have long-term effects? Can his friend, Soong Li, survive the consequences of his choice of action?
